What is Grass Sprigging?

Sprigging Sprigging is done by either a machine that cuts grooves into the soil then mashes sprigs of grass into them, or you can till up the ground and spread sprigs across the surface followed by rolling to mash the sprigs into the soil.

Only warm season grasses can be sprigged; hese grasses have stolons, rhizomes or both. These pieces of live grass plants will take off growing after being transplanted or sprigged giving you a sod quality lawn for a quarter of the cost.

Advantages of Sprigging

  1. Springing is usually less expensive then sodding, plugging, and hydroseeding your lawn.
  2. By picking out individual springs, you can help avoid any unwanted weeds, grasses, etc. that may be introduced to your lawn.
  3. Like seeding, sprigging can help create a deep and solid root system.
  4. With good establishment techniques, sprigged hybrid bermuda grasses can become established to provide hay or grazing the first season. Sprigged perennial peanut will usually take two to three seasons for full establishment
